The burning of white sage incense is primarily an act of purification. The most important thing you need to know about smudging is that Native American white sage incense smoke has strong cleansing power.
Indeed, the smoke from true Californian Native American white sage has the property of attracting negative energies and removing them from places, objects, or people.
What is noticed when burning Californian white sage incense is a significant improvement in the feelings experienced with oneself and with one's environment after using it. Simply burn the leaves.

Here are all the steps and tips for a successful ceremony.
Step 1: Get some Californian Native American white sage and a receptacle such as an abalone shell, bowl, or any other heat-resistant container. Set up on a non-flammable surface. The abalone shell is widely used because its shape allows for good heat resistance and natural ventilation. It was traditionally associated with a strong symbolism of the goddess of the Pacific Ocean.
Step 2: Light your sage, preferably with a match. Let the leaves burn for a few seconds and blow out the flame. Be careful, burned white sage leaves can fly off quite easily. If you are using a smudge stick (which is denser), let it burn a little longer before blowing it out. Caution: if you are using a metal receptacle, be careful not to burn yourself if you need to move it.
Step 3: White sage should be used in a well-ventilated area. Indoors, it is advisable to open one or more windows to create an airflow. This allows for the evacuation of excess smoke and the famous positive ions or "bad spirits" with it. Then, simply walk through each room and guide the smoke into all corners as you pass. After a few minutes, you should feel the changes in energies.
Step 4: Wait for the smudge stick to burn out completely. Native American belief is that white sage incense continues to burn as long as the purification is not complete.
Step 5: If you truly wish to extinguish your stick during its combustion, simply smother it with sand, by crushing it in its ashes, or by passing the end directly under water.
Certain sacred objects are used for the ceremony. An eagle feather, for example, is used to disperse the smoke to the desired location and enhances the effect of the sage. All accessories are themselves purified before use.
